The Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago recently held its annual Energy Conference at which several companies were awarded, over the two days, for their efforts in safety, social investment, energy related export, and energy conservation and energy efficiency innovation. I.T. Energy Management (ITEM) walked away with the award for ‘Best Green House Gas Reduction Project.’

The Honourable Minister of Public Utilities Senator Robert Le Hunte was quoted as saying that, “Trinidad and Tobago’s energy inefficiency over the last 25 years was in the ball park of $20 Billion dollars”. He emphasized his focus was to increase energy efficiency and energy conservation efforts in order to decrease local energy consumption by 20% in the shortest possible time frame. He further mentioned that this would translate into T&TEC not consuming $200 million worth of fossil fuel annually, which could then be sold on the open market for $400 million (bringing into the country much needed forex). The $200 million that was not spent at T&TEC will then be injected back into the economy resulting in the nation benefiting to the tune of $600 million.

Minister Le Hunte also advised that just because Trinidadians have a gift of cheap subsidized energy does not mean they should waste it.

Rick Rennes, President of ITEM, reiterated that given Trinidad and Tobago’s financial position, the energy subsidy may not be affordable for a sustained period of time. Now is the opportune time for not only the energy industries to invest in energy efficiency and energy savings but the country as a whole.

The Minister is targeting 20% in energy savings nationally and ITEM has already seen as much as 35% energy savings on the projects they have completed both locally and regionally thus there is a proven solution to this reduction and saving drive.

In achieving this award I.T. Energy Management (ITEM) surpassed the competition with its Lighting and HVAC integration solution which they applied to five buildings belonging to Guardian Life of the Caribbean Limited in 2018.

The buildings located in West, East, Central and South Trinidad, collectively realized a reduction in energy consumption of 35% with a 70% reduction on the lighting circuits and a 30% reduction on the HVAC consumption.

The other main benefits of the system include the ability to manage all the buildings from one central control station, the receipt of email alerts for both platforms, lighting and HVAC and the reduction of Guardian Life of the Caribbean’s carbon footprint.

We at I.T. Energy Management (ITEM) are proud of our track record, both in Trinidad and the wider Caribbean, having positively affected over 30 large commercial buildings within the region over the last 10 years - from Jamaica to Barbados to Grenada and Guyana.

This award serves to solidify our presence and puts a spotlight on the success we have been enjoying as it relates to providing the right energy efficiency solutions to match the unique needs of each client and their buildings.

We would like to thank everyone who has made this journey a success thus far, as we look forward to a Greener Future in Trinidad and Tobago through Reducing, Controlling and Saving.
